SUMMER PROJECT

                                                       "If i could i would"

For my summer project I was asked to create a mood board and visualise were I would want to be in five years time, were I dream of working, how I would like to look and what type of person I would want to be. I also thought about how I will want to feel in five years i.e be calm and happy and reach for a contented lifestyle as I feel this is equally as important and reaching a "certain financial goal". The project was provided to hep us start to understand how to portray our ideas and give us a feel of how we will managed with the creative demand in our course.

For the second part of the summer project i had to pick two films from the list and write a short review on them. i really enjoyed doing thing i love to chat and write about most things i have an intrest in.
i was asked to write about
- The genre of the film
- Think about what makes the film iconic, did it start a style movement or was it mirroring society?
- Did it help to make the leading lady or man a fashion/style icon?
- Is there a particular accessory, piece of clothing or make-up look that defines the film?
- Who were the makeup artist, hair designers, fashion designers that worked on the film
- Why do you think the film is iconic in terms of fashion and style?

The great Gatsby

I have chosen to write a review on the film "The great Gatsby". The genre of this film is romance/drama set in the 1922 with Leonardo DiCaprio as leading man and Carry Mulligans as leading lady.
The film has a futuristic edge to it and yet mirrors society in the 1920s in both growth and how women celebrated the flapper girl. This film is beautifully portrayed though make-up and costume. the 1920s was a time when women became bolder with there appearance and yet still maintained the classic look.
The leading man Jay Gatsby and leading lady Daisy Buchanan style screams wealth along with power. You get a true feel of the flapper girl era though Carey Mulligans costumes. one of my favourite is worn by her; its a heavy embellished dress in nude with pearls create flowers on the back. The cut is very typical for this era and yet i feel it has a softer more romantic touch to it, unlike the typical heavy lines and colours worn by women around the art deco movement.
The make-up designer was Maurizio Silvi, with his forty years of experience and knowledge he's renowned for working on sets such as "Gangs of New York", "The tourist" and HBO series "Rome". The hair stylist was Katonia Amperidus and costume designer Catherine Martian, known for working for such films as "Romeo and Juliet", "Moulin rouge" and "Austrian"
I believe this film is iconic in terms of fashion and style as you can get a true feel for the 1920s. The era was renowned for being fast paced and booming, society was shifting and women were being lead to be more experimental by the likes of Coco Channel, one of the most influential iconic figures of the twentieth century.

True romance
True romance is a typical Quentain Tarantino film of high speed romance, adventure action film, set in the early 1990s. its a story of a prostitute and a punter falling in love, committing murder and ending up with a suitcase full of cocaine.
Clarence who is played by Christian Slater is portrayed as a loner with a secret obsession of Elvis. This is evident in some of his tailoring in his cloths and his fifties hair style. Alabama has that typical trashy, hocker style of the late eighties early nighties, of bright bras showing, fur jackets and denim. I believe they are style icons as this look is repeated in variations again and again by the likes of Rihanna in her iconic song "we found love".
The film really mirrors society at the time, as its based down town Detroit which was renowned for poverty and exploitation of young women though gangs and violence.
One of my favourite looks from the film is worn by Alabama, its a red and white pokka dot, fifties cut dress. She wears gold elvis glass and bright red lips. it really defines her as a person as she knows she has got sex appeal and proves it by wearing something so demure and pretty.
Ron Scott was the make-up artist for the set along with Ellen Wong as hair stylist.
